PRITIKIN PROGRAM: FOODS AFFECTING YOUR CHOLESTEROL LEVELDecrease CholesterolRecommended foods that may help decrease blood cholesterol include fruit, vegetables, beans, peas, oats, barley, and sweet potatoes. Although a food or food component may decrease cholesterol, it may not be recommended on the Pritikin Lifetime Eating Plan for other reasons. For example, diets high in polyunsaturated fats may lower cholesterol; however, high-fat diets are associated with obesity and a greater risk of certain cancers.
Increase CholesterolSome foods that can dramatically increase your cholesterol level if consumed in sufficient amounts include tropical oils, egg yolks, butter, lard, hydrogenated fats, and shortening. Even foods such as fish, poultry, or lean meat – have the potential to increase your blood cholesterol level. To keep your blood cholesterol at a reasonably safe level, the recommended portions of these foods and nonfat dairy products is controlled. Remember you can eat too much of a good thing.
Little or No EffectFoods that have little or no effect on blood cholesterol levels include monounsaturated fats, refined sugars, refined starches, and alcohol.*7/345/5*
